HI all, I thought I would start a 2009 thread! Brian and I saw Slumdog Millionaire yesterday. It is a great movie, even though it is a bit dark at times. Has anyone else seen this movie? I would recommend it!
It made me think of a few other movies for your rental list. Children of Heaven (I think out of Iran) Born into Brothels ( documentary out of India, and surprisingly uplifting)

I don't think I've watched any movies yet... Oh! I saw Tale of Despereaux.
I think There Will Be Blood is coming in the mail today.
I cannot WAIT to see Coraline. I think I'll see it in the theater.

So far I've seen two movies. Gran Torino, and Marley and Me. Both are very good, but for those who are sensitive, Marley and Me is very Sad. I almost Cried. Well, maybe I shed one or two reluctant tears. . Robin

I guess I won't be seeing Marley & Me then. I thought there might be something sad that happens to Marley & I just can't stand to watch bad things happen to dogs. I still cry every time I see Turner & Hooch.
I saw The Curious Case of Benjamin Button yesterday. It's such a weird concept, but they pulled it off well. It didn't seem hokey at all. There were some really funny parts and some sad parts too.

( documentary out of India, and surprisingly uplifting) I saw it and while I liked the story, the violence was too much for me. It's funny because I can watch a good action adventure flick with violence with no problem, but when it comes to stuff that probably actually goes on I was just sickened by it.

Michelle said "I saw it and while I liked the story, the violence was too much for me."
I know what you mean, it was hard for me to watch at times because it felt so real. I doubt that there is a lot of fictionalizing going on in that story. I'm still glad we saw it though, and parts were very beautiful as well. It reminded me in many ways of "Trainspotting" one of the best and most uncomfortable movie watching experiences I have had.

I really liked Gran Terino. There is a lot of language, of course, and a LOT of racial slurs, of course. But.. I really liked the story. My parents didn't like it so much, but I did. I, uh, cried.

We saw it too. I liked most of it. It was kinda like Forrest Gump meets.... oh, I dunno, Back to the Future?
So, what was up with the little girl who played Kate Blanchett as a kid? She had a strange voice- I'd almost swear it was a voice-over.
I didn't like all the scenes set in the modern day with her daughter. Somehow that part just seemed hokey/ unbelievable.
I loved the guy who gets struck by lightning scenes, plus just all the travelling over the world and different interesting characters.

Sarah- I really liked the Visitor! Margot- Yeah, I read it a couple (3!!!) years ago with my fifth graders when I was student teaching, and I loved it then. I just read it again the other day, since I will definitely be going to the theater to see the movie. I wanted to make sure I remembered the actual story. And re-reading it had me wondering if there is, or if there will be, another book. I'm also excited about this: www.apple.com/trailers/focus_features/9/Movies in my list to see: Revolutionary Road Wendy and Lucy and probably a bunch of others. It seems like there are a ton of great movies out now. I saw "There Will Be Blood" for the first time the other night.. it was good. A bit long, but Paul Dano was amazing.

I agree about Coraline being a bit scary. I read it when I used to work in an elementary school library and I found it a bit disturbing. I am not surprised to see it join in with The Nightmare Before Christmas producer because the dark depiction will match the theme and plot. I am curious to hear if any of you liked it. I won't go see it because I am in a place where I like happy endings.
