What are some of your earliest memories of contemporaneous history book-worthy events?

First memory would be Mt. Saint Helens eruption. We were camping in the gorge, hightailed it home and beat the ash.
More memorable was the Challenger shuttle explosion in 1986. I had my appendix out the night before and was in the hospital. My mom came in and told me to turn on the TV. I was way into the space program at the time and was devastated. I'm pretty sure I cried, but that could have been the pain and/or the drugs! I also had a sick feeling because, if you recall, Christa Macauliff (sp?), a teacher nominated by her students was on board. I had nominated my 4th grade teacher, and I thought about if he would have won.

I also remember the Challenger explosion as a second grader (I think). I was at school and we were watching the launch. Needless to say a stunned elementary school audience. Who was your 4th grade teacher? Mrs. Duncan?

No, I didn't go to PC until 6th Grade. I went to Sunnyside Elementary in Clackamas. And you would have been in 5th Grade when Challenger exploded.
I also just remembered when Reagan was shot at, when I was in 1st grade. The principal came on over the intercom to announce that the president had been shot. He emphasized that he was NOT dead, but had been hurt. We were stunned. I particularly remember sitting next to Stan, the new kid, recently moved from Alabama. He had a thick Southern accent. None of us could understand him, and he would just laugh at us all the time, because he couldn't understand us. He cried that day. I was scared, because it was rumored on the playground that the Russians were behind it, and I was scared of the Russians.

What is your earliest memory of a contemporaneous history book-worthy event? The Chernobyl disaster of April 1986. I was four years old. I still remember how we were forbidden to go out and eat any of the fruits growing in our garden. I also remember how I didn't understand what the heck was going on but felt the worries of my parents strongly.

The Challenger explosion. I remember watching the launch in class, and it was very upsetting to all of us. My father recorded the launch, and I remember watching it a few more times at home.

Chernobyl and challenger were both in the same year, huh? 1986 was a heady time for technology.

Can someone think of a historical event short before the Challenger explosion? It would be fun to see if I have more memories I forgot.

I wasn't around the area for the Mt. St. Hellens eruption, but I remember visiting the NW a few months after and collecting a jar of ash.
There were the talks of the "Star Wars" SDI program that some thought was a joke and others thought quite legit.
I do remember the campaign for president in 1984, and the '84 Olympic games.
I remember Challenger explosion and the rash of inappropriate, but somehow funny jokes that came about as a result of the tragedy.

I remembered those too, and thought about including them in my original post...but decided not to.
I was in LA visiting my grandparents during the games. It was so exciiting!

I remember the first mention of AIDS- my parents were talking with Steve's parents about it at the beach. Probably in 1985/1986 or so?

I vaguely remember Nixon's resignation and Ford's inaugeration, Others are: -The Blazers '76 victory with Bill Walton at the helm, -Three-mile Island, -the Iran hostage snafu in the Carter administration and subsequent release right after Reagan was elected. I was in 7th grade when Reagan was shot, we watched the news replay that day during science class, it interrupted our squid dissection. You guys that are just barely remembering Chernobyl and Challenger are making me feel very old Josh, just curious, are you trying to make a case for the reliability of the gospels here?

I remember these same things. I was in S. California, in class, when Challenger was lost. My teacher had gone out of the room to see if we could move next door to watch with the other class. She came back, and was crying.
I was scared of Chernobyl -- we were at my grandparent's house in Lake Oswego, it was crazy to watch that.
I do remember Mt. St. Helens, but I was in Eugene, so it was more of a vicarious memory -- now I'm looking at it in the twilight as I write this!
I remember when Aids came around as well, but probably before all of you because my grandfather's brother was one of the first to die in the United States of the disease -- he was one of those who got the disease from a blood transfusion, before they knew what was going on with all that.
I was home sick when Reagan was shot, we watched in on the news and I remember my mom was upset. I thought we were seeing it live, but I can't imagine live TV was quite that quick in those days -- I was certainly watching the video within an hour of it occurring.
For some reason I remember a time around New Year's in 1983 because I remember telling my dad that I would miss 1982 because I thought it was a good year. I don't think that's really an historical event though...
I remember being in line for one of the original Star Wars movies, before that, I remember my dad pulled over on the side of the road so we could peak over the fence when it was playing in a drive through in Eugene.
And finally... I remember the night distinctly. We got a phone call after my brother and I had already gone to bed. But it was important, so my parents got us up, we got into the car and drove to one of my dad's friend's homes. It was dark, and we still wore our pajamas. We entered the house and were escorted to one of the rooms where we were to behold... Atari. Space Invaders. 1980, baby!

Great post, Ben!
It made me think of another earlier memory.
I remember going to see Empire Strikes Back (1980) in the theater with my dad and grandpa. I particularly remember the lightsaber duel at the end and my grandpa getting up in the middle of the movie for a smoke break!
