I pity you Robin. I really do.

I don't need your pity. If you knew anything about me, my life and my family, you would know that I'm quite blessed and happy.

I though Mo's post was cogent and coherent (even if I don't know if I agree with every minutae*)
But I don't pity Robin. He does have a great family and he got Tamiflu! ;D
Glad to see you guys back at it. But don't let it boil over too much because I feel like we've got a great bunch of thoughtful debaters/discussers right now (unprecedently so) and I'm just ready to feel better enough to jump in the fray and really mix it up.
For those times over the last couple days were I was actually able to come online for a few minutes, some of these discussions gave me a rare chuckle or some thought to dwell more positively upon.

Omigosh, Josh---you're ALIVE! We've been concerned for you--and praying the whole time. (Paul says he just prayed for you 60 seconds ago, so consider yourself VERY current!!) I feel like a dork for not picking up on your pneumonia hints. When you said you'd never been this sick and you couldn't understand why you weren't getting better, I should have guessed! I've had it twice--once, more seriously than the other. They were seriously the worst illnesses I've had. We are still praying. PLEASE be a good kid and do everything you're supposed to do because it has a nasty way of reoccuring and believe me, you don't want that. (Is Rose waiting on you hand and foot??? lol! Poor woman! I know she has been through it too!) The Troolines love you

The last I heard, I believe Sarah Palin is a Christian sister. I have been searching the internet where Sarah Palin said that Bono was the King of Ireland. The only thing I could find was a spoof with Bono and a Palin copy cat. In this spoof the subject of Ireland came up. Can you tell me where you saw Sarah Palin on national TV making that statement?

Well Palin never said that Bono was the King of Ireland but if you saw any of the extended interviews she did with journalists she has a stunning lack of knowledge on both domestic and foreign policy. I also find it interesting that she left her position of responsibility as Governor the same year that the Alaska trust fund has to decrease its payment to Alaskans due to major financial pressures. I cannot take someone seriously as a "LEADER" when they cut and run. I am not being hard on her because she is a Republican, I am equally hard on all incompetent leaders. For example I think Ted Kulungowski in Oregon is a STUNNINGLY ineffective leader and he is a liberal democrat. I find it absurd that Sarah Palin is STILL getting a great deal of attention as a potential leader when she did not even have the sticktoiteveness to bloody finish her term as Governor. As to the issue of Obama winning the peace prize, I think it is patently observed. He has attempted to do much but has accomplished virtually NOTHING. I also find it ironic that they awarded the "PEACE PRIZE" to the commander and chief of the world's most powerful armed forces that are CURRENTLY ENGAGED in TWO Seperate WARS and all kinds of special ops missions in North Africa. Also the idea of rewarding someone for attempted peace is just stupid. To quote sideshow Bob from "The Simpsons." "They don't give a Nobel Prize for attempted Science."

Well I guess you said it, PALIN NEVER BONO IS THE KING OF IRELAND. You are welcome not to agree with her or like her but please do not say she said something she did not say. That is not right especially since she is a Christian woman.

That is not right especially since she is a Christian woman. I agree Ben! If we would not treat our own mother or sister in this fashion, we should also not treat your sisters in Christ that way. Spreading and reapeating rumors is very divisive. Also whether she decided to leave her job as Governor or not it is a personal decision, and we should allow for Sarah Palin to determine her own career path. This in no different that say a senator leaving his Job early to be President.

Oops, sorry for kidding! I was, of course, referring to the SNL skit where the actress that played her made the statement. I said it as an aside to Josh because I assumed he had seen the skit. (It was the same one where she said she could see Russia from her house...) Didn't mean to start up the defense! It was a lot more of a joke about Bono than a joke about Palin. ;D

I have a question for Robin and Ben, in light of their response, and this is just that, a question. I don't have a formed opinion.
You cited Palin's faith as a sort of protective hedge around making fun of her, etc.. Is this true because she's simply a human? Or that she particularly claims to be a Christian? Should politicians be immune to mockery? Don't almost all US politicians claims to be "brothers" or "sisters" in Christ?

It is one thing to raise legitimate concerns and disagreements with politicians regardless of their religious orientation. But unfair attacks such as the one that Margot eluded to should be called out as unacceptable. It is even worse for Christians to repeat such rhetoric when it is about another Christian. Do you Josh, find it acceptable to "make fun" of someone for something that the person never said? What if the person being unfairly mocked was not Palin, but instead Hugh Ross, or Bono? They are both public figures and Christians. Isn't the fact that since they are within the body of Christ reason enough to defend them against unfair attacks? In the end, whether a person is Christian or not, it is unacceptable to spread false rumors about them. I just take it more personally when it is another Christian.

Not normally. But on something like Saturday Night Live, for an actor portraying a politician to poke fun by saying something that politician might be imagined to say (with plenty of hyperbole)? I dunno. I think it's the cost of being a politician.
I really try never to misrepresent anyone. But I don't really feel sorry for her, knowing her decisions to become a politician in the first place.

Doesn't that go with choosing to be in the public eye? You have to expect some ribbing. As to false rumors, in this media age, we are often to quick to judge what is real, what is speculation, and even what is parody. I've seen people be appaled by what they read in The Onion, thinking it was real news. Other groups and individuals quote obscure blogs and crackpot radio personalities with no real credibility. Whether right or not, Palin gave the media plenty to make fun of in her real interviews. There were times during the Charlie Gibson interview where I thought I was watching SNL. (and that was before I saw Tina Fey's impersonantion) I laughed just as hard at the recent SNL Obama send-up as I did any Palin/Bush send up they did. People need to get a sense of humor.

Let me see if I understand what you are saying. If someone spreads false rumors about someone, it's okay? Being in the political arena justifies it? No wonder people are sick of politics. I think having different views on the issue is good. Telling lies about someone will always be wrong in my view.

False rumors is one thing, but where did those "false rumors" start? By some idiot hearing what they heard on SNL, or read in The Onion, and then passing them on as truth. Telling lies is a whole lot different than social satire.
