11/9/06:
As I pointed out Tuesday, the real 'shocking' thing about how God revealed himself to the ancient Israelites is not that He revealed Himself as insistant on holiness (that was just par for the course in ancient religion), but that He revealed Himself as wanting relationship with humans in the first place. Whereas most other religious systems were all about 'transactions' with the gods to get them to do something favorable, or to avoid their anger, Yahweh was saying- "I am Holy, yet here is how we can have relationship" That's astounding.

Exodus 35:30-33
Then Moses said to the Israelites, "See, the LORD has chosen Bezalel son of Uri, the son of Hur, of the tribe of Judah, and he has filled him with the Spirit of God, with skill, ability and knowledge in all kinds of crafts- to make artistic designs for work in gold, silver and bronze, to cut and set stones, to work in wood and to engage in all kinds of artistic craftsmanship.
A great reminder that the Spirit of God enables us with all kinds of gifts- not just in teaching, preaching, exhortation, and leading in worship (churchy things we might typically think of), but in artistry as well.
James 1:17
Every good and perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of the heavenly lights, who does not change like shifting shadows.
