One of the best history intersecting with Christianity books I have read in recent years was Dominion by Tom Holland. Coming from a gracious atheist, the book points out how indebted (even dependant) all the best impulses of modern society are to Christianity. Doesn't spare the warts in our history, but does shed a lot of light on the the power of the gospel in the history of our world, especially at a time when Christianity is seen increasingly as the enemy of human flourishing.
