I say thirty years, but I think it will be longer. There is still an abundance of oil that has not been tapped into. I think that if the change were to take place any sooner, we would be seeing a major shift by the auto makers right now, and you would see a decline in new oil exploration, and neither of these are taking place. Also cars being produced today are made to run for 250,000 miles or more. If you drive an average of 10,000 miles per year, thats 25 years. These cars will be on the road for a very long time.
Wish I could say more, but I have to run.

I voted 30 years too, but really I think it will be more than that, if at all. Let's face it, Americans do not like change, unless it is very subtle and goes unnoticed. It will be at least a generation or more before such sweeping reforms. We have regressed in the last couple of months in many regards (the powder keg of possible race war due to Arizona legislation (Further indicative of the vocal polarization of political parties), the BP Gulf debacle, Texas curriculum changes etc.) A lot of people will be reluctant to give up their oil sourced vehicles, because they are either ignorant or apathetic. And they will fight for their "right" to be ignorant or apathetic, some violently. That is just how I see the future going in this country: an entitlement attitude coupled with miseducation leading to violence, no matter if it is oil, immigration, gay rights, ad infinitum.

Well, come 2040 this thread should be really interesting....
as we're reading it in 3D with word-associated pictures streaming by while our robots give us a back massage.
