I just heard about this: www.classicpetra.comBob Hartman, Louie Weaver, Mark Kelly, John Lowry, and Greg X. Volz! They are recording a new album of the classic songs with "modern production techniques" along with some new material. They will tour to support the album starting this fall (dates/locations TBD) I would be VERY excited to see "classic" Petra again. When the schedule is announced, who's with me? FYI: my very first album I bought with my own money was "Not Of this World". I had to beg and plead my parents to let me buy it...they were not sure about "Christian Rock". I listened to that cassette so much it wore out. I now own a complete discography. I love Petra so much!

I did have some early Petra influence, but before long I became a Petra snob- preferring "harder" Christian rock (Bloodgood, Whitecross, Deliverance, Vengeance, etc.) and then when I finally opened up to a wider variety of music I found their lyrics (at least their later ones) a bit lacking.
But, and here's the irony compared to your story, my mother loves them! She even wants "graverobber" to be played at her funeral someday!
A Petra game: see how many song titles of theirs you can name that are either a cliche/maxim (like This Means War or Never Say Die) or a single word (like Love or Prayer or Creed). I challenge you to find 10!
My favorite Petra songs: it's a tie between Judas Kiss and The Road to Zion.
One other fact: the band I was in on high school had several Petra fans and we covered "Road to Zion", "Beyond Belief" and "Creed" I think. Beyond Belief had a fun bass line and I got to sing Road to Zion.

agreed. according to the website, though, they are only doing the Greg X. Volz stuff...Never Say Die through Beat The System. After Beyond Belief, they were horrible, IMO.
But when I found their older stuff...Petra, Come along with us, Washes Whiter Than, I thought it was awesome. Lyrically they are not that strong, but Bob Hartman is one hell of a guitarist. And Louie Weaver aint bad on the skins.

I've found myself listening to a lot of the Volz era Petra music lately. My first album was Not of this World as well. My folks were also pretty reluctant to get it for me. My dad's attitude toward Petra changed for the better when I got us tickets to see them in their "Back to the Street" Tour. I even won the Back to the Street album in a radio contest.
"Judas Kiss" and "Shakin' the House" were always favorites. Did you know that the back-masking at the beginning of "Judas Kiss " says "What are you looking for the Devil for when you should be looking for the Lord".
I found myself this morning listening to Grave Robber after hearing about the death of a friend's 9 year old's death yesterday. It did raise my spirits a bit.
I think that I would love to catch "classic" Petra should they come to town.
