I was listening to some radio hosts this morning talk about pets. People were offering ideas about why their dog was the world's smartest. Got me thinking about favorite pets we have had and why.
I had the usual assortment, but hands down the best pet I've ever had was a stray cat named Max who adopted us eight years ago. Gentle, loving, spoke when spoken to, gave kisses on command, never, ever bit or scratched anyone (even when the neighbor girl picked him up and swung him around by his tail) and single handedly raised up another kitten that we brought home to live with us when he was three years old. He bathed him, taught him to hunt, climb trees, amused him with his tail when he was small, etc, etc.
As if that all weren't enough:we used to have a appliance repair man that the rental agency used to send us whenever something broke down. Let's just say this guy was not the sharpest crayon in the box. So, he parks his car in front of our house, leaves the keys in the ignition and comes on in--not noticing that Max snuck in the back seat while he was unloading his tools. He goes back to the truck a few minutes later and comes back all embarassed and says:
"Uh, your cat locked my truck ."
Turns out Max walked across the driver's side door rest and stepped on the lock button. When the kids and I run out to the truck, we see Max calmly sitting in the drivers seat staring forward.
"Max!" we say, "that's not okay! Unlock the door!"
At which point he turns to the left, hops back on the driver's side door rest and proceeds to step on the unlock button.
He was, quite simply, the best pet in the world.
Unfortunately, Max is no longer with us--probably the victim of neighborhood coyotes. I don't think we'll ever really get over it.
What about you? Got any good stories about favorite pets??
