A couple of us who had the day off today played strategy games. Your favorite strategy board games?
My top two would be:
Axis and Allies (various versions including my own creation*) Carcassonne
* yes, I know that earns me official geek status

I've been itching to play Talisman sometime. Sadly my strategy game experience is pretty limited, although Risk and Chess do pop up every so often.
I'd say as far as pure strategy game, I hold Chess in very high esteem, as it's abstract and open enough to attract a wide range of people, while complicated enough that no one has ever fully understood it. That being said I'm not particularly skilled and can only label myself 'enthusiast'.
We got Ethan 'Heroscape' last year, it's pretty neat. We have a good time playing it and it's open enough to let imagination run wild (rampant?).
And of course, we have a card game called 'Hack' that's probably the most fun to play, if not particularly balanced.

I've been playing a TON of Stratego with Justus as of late, too. I'd kind of like to play a game or two with anyone else here who's into that. The good thing about it is that it's a really quick game but actually pretty nuanced.

I loved Stratego as a kid!
If you like Carcassonne, I'm willing to say you might enjoy Settlers of Catan. I played both with the same group of people. I've only played Carc once, though.
Also, have you heard of Munchkin? I think it was about the most fun I've had playing a card-strategy-RPG whatever you would call it. It's apparently like Magic: The Gathering or D&D, but it has a layer of fun all its own because it is intended as a parody/satire of such games. Anyway, it is a game that needs at least 4 people I think who are willing to sit down for a LONG game to get started, and I would be interested in buying the game but not unless I could get use out of it...

I love chess. My son was a Washington State champion when he was in the 5th grade. Sadly though he did not pass his skills on to me.

Kraig: Yes, I've played Settlers of Catan and liked it. When you played Carcassonne did you play with any expansions? Munchkin... hmmm, is it called Munckin Foo? Our friend Douglas had us play that a time or two. It was pretty fun. That says a lot about you, Ben, that you expect some reciprocal "passing on" to come from your son.

I don't believe I played Carc with any expansions. I also cheated and won.
Munchkin doesn't have "Foo" as part of it, that I know. Is it a role playing card game where you are a munchkin and there are different levels and races?

Ok, first of all...YOU CHEATED? What's up with that? You know cheaters never prosper! ...and second, you really play a game where you are a "munchkin"? How cute! Can my 3-year old daughter play...she's a munchkin too! You cheatin' munchkin!

Here's how I cheated, and won: There were 3 cards/tiles left, and I was the middle of the three remaining players. My best friend was first and he drew his card/tile. While he was debating where to play it, I drew my tile and looked at it - knowing that there was one specific type of tile out there that I could use to win the game. I did not draw it. I didn't know if my best friend had either, so I convinced the final player to look at his piece and show me. He had the one I needed. So we switched. I won. My best friend claimed to know I cheated when I confessed (2ish years later).
Munchkin is not for kids.

I saw the Munchkin game at Barnes and Nobles today!
And guess what, I saw a Cthulu expansion for it!!!!
I expect Brian, Alex, and Aimee's ears to perk up.

A multitasking required strategy game where you draw cards to conquer islands and try to have more islands than your opponent. It's a high thinking level 2-player game.
