So, Nate turned me on to the music of M Ward some time ago. I've been digging his music lately in particular. He's originally a local Portland artist. He's pretty eclectic- ranging from dylanesque folk and blues to Norah Jonesish 20's style tunes. He explores spiritual themes somewhat along the lines of Sufjan Stevens or Bill Mallonee (subtle, but infused throughout with a lot of Americana type themes). Anyone else heard of him? Did he used to be in a band? I guess I can look.
I've heard his name thrown around a million times, but I have no idea what he sounds like.

Sorry that link was bad.
I don't think he was in any band of note- just solo and he's also been a guest on other's albums.
I think you'd like him, judging by some of your other favs.
The songs I like best:
"Were you there?" "Helicopter" "Poor Boy" "Let's Dance" "Archangel Tale" "Beautiful Car"

Nate (if you're reading along):
I think "poor boy" is the perfect soundtrack to the final resurrection/ the new heaven's and the new earth:
Poor boy Head against a pillow Fast asleep Poor girl Head against a window Lost in a dream
One day they will be as giants Stronger than the sun But that day ain't yet come
Wide world Wide world of sorrow Won't stand a chance Wide world Wide world of sorrow Won't stand a chance
One day they will be as giants Stronger than the sun But that day ain't yet come
Did anyone listen to the spot on Ward on NPR yesterday?
Meghan- I have a feeling you might like this guy.

My Paste magazine sampler has an M.Ward track on it (presumably from the new CD), and I hate to say it, but you're right Josh. I do like it. So I will probably look into more stuff.
I AM weirded out by the fact that they featured his CD in the People magazine reviews. But I guess I can't indict guilt by association.

Well I guess now the truth is out. I see how much my opinion matters to you. You know, Nate was listening to M Ward long before he was "cool", so I don't feel so bad about it myself. Plus, Nate is my standard of genuine coolness.

Haha. Now Nate just needs to post his daily playlist and we can all get on board!
Do you listen to the Decemberists, Josh? I just read about a new CD coming out in March. They're from Portland. We should make a Portland playlist with the likes of Menomena and Viva Voce and .. other people.

Meghan: Haven't heard of them, but interested.
Nate: The most recent Christianity Today has a very glowing review of M Ward's new album. Sounds excellent. Have you heard anything about it? I guess he taps into some Johnny Cash and William Blake vibes for some of it, which has gone my interest piqued.

Nate- expect the song "From a Pirate Radio Sermon" to be added to the Aletheia songbook real soon.

Yes! That song is sick. I've always thought that could/should become part of the repertoire. We played that for one of our shows, but we had to loop it when it got to the crazy psychedelic part at the end.
"I am waiting for the day when I will finally know surrender and the weak will not be weak anymore"
Love it.

I'd recommend "Nate's Mix" Installment 2. ;D
We listened to it on the way to the beach and on the way back and I have to say, Nate, I love every song now!

Yeah, " The Nate Mix - Installment 2" is pretty frickin' good. Maybe too good for a first timer. I don't want to blow you mind to bits or have your face melt. As for an album to start with, it's hard to say because i've never really experienced them as albums. I just got a fat pile of MP3's and sorted through it randomly, and they're spread out pretty evenly over "Nate's Mix." Maybe start with "Duet For Guitars # 2." That's his first album.
His discography is:
Duet For Guitars #2 Transfiguration of Vincent Transistor Radio Post War To Go Home Hold Time

Feist + M. Ward = Awesome. I tried looking for that track, but couldn't find it. Do you know where the show is? I think this should be a definite goal.
I don't know Rose, I heard you were kind of a hater at first. We will probably be able to overlook this blemish on your record though.
Megan: Menomena just put on a free show down in my hood (SE industrial area) a couple weeks back for PDX Pop Now. I don't know their stuff that well, and I only caught a couple songs, but they seemed pretty good despite borderline sound quality. There was some line about "if Jesus would only wash my feet" or something that gave me mini-chills. Are you feeling there stuff? What about Viva Voce? I've only heard about them. I'm pretty sure I had a psychology class back in school with one of the dudes (Danny) from Menomena.
