It's pretty rare that a film draws comparisons with Schindler's List, The Thin Blue Line and Capturing the Friedmans, but Dear Zachary: A Letter to a Son About His Father has received that level of praise. I'm a movie nut, and a documentary freak, so I've never been more excited about a movie than I am about this. And it is finally coming to Portland for a limited engagement showing at the Hollywood Theater.
The doc was made by a filmmaker whose best friend was murdered. The killer was never captured, but was believed to be the pregnant ex-girlfriend of the victim, who now lives in Canada, safe from extradition and apparently raising the victim's son. Dear Zachary is a tribute to Zachary's father that the filmmaker hopes Zachary will see when he comes of age. It's also a seething critique on the judicial system and on society's ambivalence in the face of true horror.
That's all we should know, from what I've read. I'm not even watching the trailer. Schindler's List, The Thin Blue Line and Capturing the Friedmans are three of my top ten favorite movies, so I'm giddy as a schoolgirl about this one. Anyway, I think it would be great if Winding Road and Aletheia went to see this together. It's going to be a fantastic discussion piece.
It's going to be shown at the Hollywood Theater on Sandy Boulevard on the 15th-17th and on the 22nd-24th. Tickets will probably go quickly, especially if one of the local papers pick up a review. I'm thinking about going both weekends, maybe once on Saturday and once on Sunday. Who is interested? If the churches arranged babysitting, could we make it happen (especially if we could head for half-price appetizers to talk about it after)? I know everyone's budgets and schedules are tight, but from everything I've read about audience members uncontrollably screaming, crying, and applauding, this one will be worth it.
