I think that there should be a required Bible as literature course in public schools because the having a basic grasp of the bible is so fundemental to understanding most English literature. Just an idea, how do you guys feel?

You know, I was just reading about a movement that was attempting to accomplish just that! If I recall, it's a bit controversial from both extreme ends (too religious or not religious enough), but there are people strongly advocating for what you're suggesting as we speak.
And you're so right. For instance, I'm reading Dracula with my students right now. I can't even count (Count?) the amount of Biblical references which make sense to me and are almost completely lost on my students.
Still, I work in Alternative Education and I have been able to do "Comparative Religions" classes and have frequently taught on the Bible. Part of it just depends on the local school climate.
BTW,

Well I tend to agree with the people who thing that religion should be kept out of public schools to the greatest extent possible, but I also believe that the Bible is so central to Western literature that it demands a special class. If students become convicted by God's word that is a happy by-product.
