Dear white Christian brothers and sisters who know their church history:
Do you think William Wilberforce, John Newton, or William Lloyd Garrison would be satisfied with the progress of racial equality in the world today?
They would certainly be pushing our people and our government to press further rather than pretending it’s already been achieved.

I received (from a few people) the response "but America has more racial equity than most of the world!", to which I replied: The "not as bad as" fallacy, also known as the fallacy of relative privation, asserts that: If something is worse than the problem currently being discussed, then the problem currently being discussed isn't that important at all. In order for the statement "A is not as bad as B," to suggest a fallacy there must be a fallacious conclusion such as: ignore A. In other words: nothing matters if it's not literally the worst thing happening.[note 1] It's popular with people who know perfectly well they're doing something wrong. Since they are fully aware that they're doing something wrong, they feel compelled to attempt to justify it and do so by pointing to other (usually worse) actions. How would Onesimus preach reconciliation?
My guess is he would approach Philemon, knowing that he was deeply flawed, abused, victimized, and Burt, but that these were no excuse to justify his sin. He would know that healing comes through Christ, that the wounds on his mind would be restored and his position in the kingdom granted. He would know Philemon would be healed as victimizer as well, but that both would join as brothers in the work in Colossae.
The issue we have today is not of an active oppression. There is no Philemon outside government officials. But the wounds of Onesimus live on unhealed. Political solutions will not heal the mind or soul, only Christ and we are his hands and feet. You can not vote racial equity into being with any law. We can only heal and care for the lost.
