This is a very interesting thread and the discussion is great...not sure I have much to add to it but I totally relate to Christopher above. I am really turned off by a sales pitch and can smell it from a mile away.

I don't have so many move in's or turnovers at my complex so I have more time....but I have school and many more things...haha....but thought I'd join the discussion (for today anyways).
I would agree that salesperson type evangelism is so odd and unnecessary. We have been so accustomed to fast food and reaching millions through the TV that we feel like evangelism should also be something we are allowed to do "through the drive thru" and for the millions. But probably Jesus wanted us to just walk in love with those around us and share the good news in the context of our small communities that we live in. Like it takes time to befriend someone in the community and eventually there will be conversations about life, love, heartache, pain, etc. and plenty of opportunity to share about one's beliefs and how they view reality. The Bible also talks about dusting your feet off if people don't respond and not trying to "control them into being saved". We cannot control people and get mad at them if they don't respond to Jesus. Christians should also get filled with the Spirit and study the Word so they will know what way the Holy Spirit is moving in each context. This is essential. But genuine evangelism still might not appeal to people because many won't want Jesus or anything about Him.

I don't know if this is an example of "disingenous evangelism", maybe just an example of "lame evangelism", but the other day one of my students told me how she was out at Panda Express for dinner with her dad when some Christian interrupted them, pelting them with questions about their eternal destiny, and when they didn't seem particularly interested, the guy told her dad that he needed to "man up to Jesus"!

I think that to be too direct about one's evangelism, or to compare "numbers" of bringing people to Christ really is disingenuous, as far as evangelism goes. The word "evangel" means gospel, which is the message of Jesus. If a person is showing a lack of care for the person they are speaking to, it is along the lines of placing a tract in a porno mag and handing that out to people. You can say that you've "evangelized" them, but people reject the gospel because of what it's packaged in.
To be truly evangelistic, one must sincerely love the other person. The whole person. Not just their soul.
