Rose and I saw a meteorite come down in a field right off I-205 on the way home tonight. The light went out just before it was going to hit the ground.
I've never seen anything like that. Very cool.

Apparently it's only a meteorite if it hits the ground (which I don't know if it did). If it almost touches the ground but burns up, then it's still a meteor. So I guess we saw a meteor almost becoming a meteorite.
(according to wikipedia)

No, it was on private property and at night. And I think it must have burned up or gotten super small before landing because the fire went out a couple seconds before it would have landed.

If any of you have seen my car (a 1994 Chevy Lumina, AKA the Jewel of the Road,) you will notice by its partially crushed hood that it was also hit by a small, yet, potentially lethal meteorite about a year ago. The lights and front bumper were unharmed, but it created a rather large divet in the hood and a cracked radiator.
We saved the meteorite and we keep it in a box in our living room to this day.
Strangely enough, that was the same day we rear-ended a truck, but that was an unfortunate coincidence and we're pretty sure it was the meteorite that did the main damage.

Check out these videos and this article on a meteor that was seen near Salt Lake City recently. You can see it completely light up the night sky like day. Crazy. Link: www.ksl.com/?nid=148&sid=8858815
