The movie of Into the Wild (Jon Krakauer), directed by Sean Penn, is completed and will be in theaters in September 2007! Here's a link: www.imdb.com/title/tt0758758/Several of us read the book and were very gripped by this true story. I even read the book with my students the last two years since Marcus tipped me off to it. Be sure and view the trailer.

I'm nervous. I would feel alot better if Sean Penn was in front of the camera rather than behind it.
It's a quiet, slow, and thoughtful story, a style that would have suited a couple of other directors I can think of: Soffia Coppola (Lost in Translation), or Eastwood, or most obviously, Werner Herzog (Grizzly Man, and the current release Rescue Dawn).
Hopefully Penn got it right. That would be very, very cool.

What did you think of the trailer?
Also, just curious, how many of you have read the book?

I really want to see this just because I read the book (Thanks Marcus). But, I'm a little nervous about how it will turn out. I hope it doesn't get turned into some gripper story with too much adventure. I think it involves a much more thoughtful young man than that. He reminded me of a couple guys I know- in love with nature, looking for a different way to live, romantics at heart... not just the love kind, but for that kind of life. I hope that comes through with the video.
In other news- they filmed some of it here. Someone I know vaguely through myspace was in one of the graduation scenes.

Hey Meghan, I hear you're back in Portland! I hope you're settling in all right. How is the sorting out of the daycare plans going? (was that a grammatical sentence?) We're really excited to hear about that development in the life of Winding-Road.

hey Josh- Yep- I'm back! I'm uhh.. kind of getting settled. I won't be SETTLED settled for a few more months (and hopefully it will happen then), but I'm going to live with some family friends for a couple months, and I'm excited about the prospect of not living out of a suitcase (because i've been doing that since the end of May and it's not too fun).
Daycare stuff is going well, I think! I think it's kind of hard to get our minds wrapped around all of the details, but we're slowly making progress and making some great connections with people in the community, so that's good news!

Not a huge fan of the trailer.
This is a film that needs to forego the grandiose musical scores, the philosophical talkiness, and the sensationalized wilderness adventure that similar scripts call for.

Emile Hirsch (Lords of Dogtown) will star as Chris McCandless.
"It's basically about a guy who is kind of going in search of himself," says Hirsch.
Let me guess. Hirsch 'kind of' read the book.
Anyway, I'm not too concerned by the trailer just because first off, what else do you expect from a trailer? and secondly, I have an uncanny ability to interject into a film that is done basically well what's missing from the book version, forgiving pretty liberally certain indulgences. This was definitely true of Lord of the Rings- hopefully it will be my experience with this film as well.

The movie opens next Friday, Sept 21st.
We can't go opening night, but how's about organizing a Sunday night (Sept 23) group viewing? Anyone interested?

Marcus, I read some articles on the movie and I'm afraid they have similar complaints to your fears. Still, I'd really like to see it.

After watching the movie, I have to say that my fears were allayed. A great film with brilliant moments. I was surprised how much of the spiritual perspective of McCandless' story was included, and even added to by Penn (especially the inclusion of the Jesus freak at the Slabs, which is not in the book. Apparently that guy played himself, which is pretty cool)
Definitely a storyline with a million levels, which is why I'm glad it's even more accessable to others as a film now.
Favorite parts, anyone who saw it?

Wow - I really enjoyed the movie! I thought they did a great job building the character - I was "in" from the beginning.
I think my favorite part was when Chris spent some time with the older gentleman, Ronald Franz. He was really sweet with Chris - very fatherly (or grandfatherly) and that was very moving.
For some reason, which I haven't pondered enough apparently, I REALLY liked the movie, even more than the book. I'm really drawn to it and keep thinking I'm ready to see it again. Not sure why exactly...but it touched me somewhere down deep.
I know...getting too touchy, feely.
