i couldn't find your original post on this josh, so i started it again.
anyways. i feel like i can never remember anything when i get asked these type of questions; favorite albums, movies, etc. but a few came to mind.
in no particular order:
"the science of sleep" - i saw this at cinema 21 for a sneak preview type deal and there was a line like 2 blocks long of people waiting to get in. it was like a hipster star wars. i didn't think we were going to get in but we did, and it was worth it. i think i was either smiling or almost crying the entire movie. mostly smiling though and i can't really remember why i was almost crying, but i digress. it's kind of in the vein of "eternal sunshine of the spotless mind." it's about this guy who can't tell the difference between his dreams and reality. it's kinda bugged out, there's some really good acting, it mixes in some animation, and there's a little love story in there too.
"the departed" - i also saw this one on a sneak preview. the first time i heard anything about it was like 30 minutes before i saw it, so i wasn't expecting much. i didn't really know what it was about, i just knew a few names attatched to it: scorcese, leo, nicholson, etc. i had to leave the movie 20 minutes early to go pick up my sick girlfriend, but the movie had me so caught up i almost made her wait out in the cold (but didn't, but it crossed my mind). then i had to wait like another week for its opening night before i could see what happened at the end. i won't give away anything, but a couple parts at the very end were a little over the top for my taste, but whatevs. marky mark and alec baldwin are both pretty awsome. nicholson, matt damon and leo are all really good too. just as a heads up too, it's pretty raw with it's violence, etc.
those were the first two that came to mind. and i'm running out of time, so i'll probably add some more later.
anyone else? i'd be curious to hear. it'd be nice to have some ideas for rentals. it seems like whenever i go to rent a movie i always draw a blank. i was just there last night and could barely find anything.

So the reason you couldn't find the post was that I started it sure that I'd be able to find a favorite movie or two from last year. But when I tried to think of one, I couldn't! I even went to a website that listed every movie of 2006 and even though I saw many of them and thought several were okay, nothing really stood out to me. That's pretty crazy.
Do you feel like 2006 was kinda a dud year in general?
I'm still racking my brain for one to recommend.
I mean, I actually liked the second Pirates movie (when most of my friends were so-so on it), but that hardly would rank as a 'best movie' in my book.
Departed sounds interesting though. What's the basic plot concept?
And I remember you mentioning the 'science of sleep'. Have to catch that one when it comes out on DVD.

In order:
Little Miss Sunshine The Departed United 93 Inside Man The Proposition The Descent
I don't know that I would recommend any of those for everyone, especially since it's a raw group. "The Descent" was one of the best horror movies I've ever seen (I'm not a huge horror guy, but there are three or four fantastic scares - the "creature reveal" almost gave me a seizure, and was worth the cost of admission alone). "The Departed" was about as well made as a crime movie can be (if you can get past the cheesy closing metaphor), and the acting was top notch. "United 93" was flawless, difficult to watch, and impossible to enjoy...as it should be. "Inside Man" was a solid popcorn flick. "The Proposition" made me feel like I was swatting flies in the ugly part of Australia right along with the characters (which wasn't exactly fun, given the content of the story), but it was exceptional at portraying depravity without glorifying it (Mel Gibson should study it). "Little Miss Sunshine" was the most fun I've had in a theater in a long time. It wasn't a masterpiece, and I took issue with its world view (like most films, I suppose), but there's something to be said for a perfectly executed "dysfunctional family takes a road trip and finds their inner bond" story. And the ending gave me a laughing tummy ache.
Yes, I just said tummy ache.
And here were my biggest disappointments of the year:
The Good Shepherd Superman Babel (ugh)
Oh, and I heard so many terrible things about "The Science of Sleep" that I skipped it. Maybe I should give it a try.

In the documentary category: high recommendations to _An Inconvenient Truth_ (the Al Gore global warming piece). One of those rare films that everyone really "should" see and consider; genuinely important.

You know, I think it was telling for 2006 when during part of the Oscars (I only watched about 10 minutes) one of the commentators gave a stastic like only 30-something percent of people surveyed had seen even one of the movies nominated for best picture. Indeed, I didn't see any of them. Of course that's largely due to the fact that I've got two kids, but, hey...

How about "walk the line" for 2006 (yes, I know this is way old, but we just re-watched it).
I thought it was solid.
Did you Cash fans like it?

I haven't seen the Johnny Cash movie even though I have several of his CDs and one live concert on DVD. I just haven't gotten around to it.
I really liked Casino Royale. I couldn't even stand watching Pierce Brosnan Playing James Bond the last several movies. He should've put a post-it on his forehead which said Cliché. Daniel Craig has revitalized the institution with a serious touch of humanity and bad-assness.
Why are we talking about 2006 when 2007 just ended? Did anybody see "I am legend"? I loved it.
