I noticed the other day while reading Acts 10 that Peter still says no to God.
"9About noon the following day as they were on their journey and approaching the city, Peter went up on the roof to pray. 10He became hungry and wanted something to eat, and while the meal was being prepared, he fell into a trance. 11He saw heaven opened and something like a large sheet being let down to earth by its four corners. 12It contained all kinds of four-footed animals, as well as reptiles of the earth and birds of the air. 13Then a voice told him, "Get up, Peter. Kill and eat." 14"Surely not, Lord!" Peter replied. "I have never eaten anything impure or unclean."
15The voice spoke to him a second time, "Do not call anything impure that God has made clean."
16This happened three times, and immediately the sheet was taken back to heaven." How long is Peter going to be haunted with this 3 times thing?
Josh, I was reminded of this passage when you read the excerpt from the book this morning, which said that after the final meeting with Jesus that Peter was basically "flawless". I think one of the reasons that I like Peter so much is because he is so unafraid of being completely frank with God even if it's telling Him no. Peter also seems to take things so literally until given some time to let God reveal things to him. And the cool thing about Peter is that he is very open to God's revelations.

Yeah, that's why I gave the caveat with that Buechner reading. The story didn't end with John 20, there was so much more to come in Peter's life, involving many ups and downs, and new realizations (and stubborness), such as in this passage.
There's the whole Galatians 2 thing were Paul has to publicly rebuke Peter for showing favoritism to Jews (which, as I'm thinking about it, makes Peter's remarks toward Gentiles in 1 Peter all the more striking).
Then, there's the possibly true legendary story about Peter's death- where Peter tries to flee from Rome but Jesus appears to him and gives him courage to go back and face his death with the other Christians (I think my dad is going to show a clip from the movie Quo Vadis on this in two weeks).
Yep, Peter had to keep learning and growing to the very end.
