3/13/06:
This one's a bit, er, um, intense to say the least:
"Christ was the rock whence was formed the stony blade for... circumcision, and the flesh of the fore-skin was the body of sin"
Augustine (354-430 AD)

Here's another good one on circumcision. You can skip to the bold text if you're in a hurry:
There is a comic dimension in the analogy between circumcision and visible community. If you are going to have a palpable sign from God that divine grace is visibly present in the community of celebration, you have to have something that can be seen. Oddly enough, the prevailing symbol for this overt participation in the people of God, according to the Abrahamic covenant, is precisely circumcision. God apparently wishes to create a sign that is visible to the whole world, yet it is visible only when nude--a neglected premise for a stand-up comedy routine.
