One of my early faith crises centered around Albert Schweitzer's considerable argument that Jesus and the New Testament authors truly expected the end of the space-time universe within their lifetime, leaving them false prophets in the final analysis. This crisis was what spurred me to a fresh investigation of eschatology (and eventually to partial preterism). But for the purposes of this thread, have any of you noticed these two little gems tucked away in the words of Mary and Paul, which seem to give us nice simple little proof texts contra Schweitzer. Namely, Mary and Paul expected that theirs would not be the "last generation" of humans:
Luke 1:47-49
and my spirit rejoices in God my Savior,
48 for he has been mindful
of the humble state of his servant.
From now on all generations will call me blessed,
49 for the Mighty One has done great things for me—
holy is his name.
Ephesians 3:21
to him be glory in the church and in Christ Jesus throughout all generations, for ever and ever! Amen.
