We talked briefly about David's harsh treatment of the Moabites in Chapter 8 (?) on Sunday. This passage indicates to me that he must have had a pretty good reason for his retaliation against them:
2 Sam. 101 In the course of time, the king of the Ammonites died, and his son Hanun succeeded him as king. 2 David thought, "I will show kindness to Hanun son of Nahash, just as his father showed kindness to me." So David sent a delegation to express his sympathy to Hanun concerning his father.
David's general attitude seems to have been to respond in kind, but not be a preemptive aggressor.
