Interesting.
I'm curious if the statements about heaven from Hawking quoted in the media, such as “There is no Heaven or afterlife for broken-down computers. That is a fairy story for people afraid of the dark.”, were delivered as opinion or fact.
If Hawking was expressing his opinion based on his general conclusions from the evidence that's one thing, but if he thinks these statements stand alone that's really weak. I seriously doubt that he thinks these are stand-alone statements of fact, even though many news outlets have portrayed it that way.

Don't you think that it would have to be an opinion? If it were a fact, you and I would not be having this conversation. Even if Hawkins is 100% confident of his position, it still does not excuse his mocking of believers.

My point was that media outlets are making it sounds like they think Hawking was making a factual argument, when in reality he was probably just chiming in with his opinion, which we're all entitled to have. I'm sure Hawking would give a better reason for his opinion if time allowed.
