I think an orthodox Christian can hold to a wide variety of views on hell, but the view that hell doesn't exist except inside our heads is outside the scope of anything definably Christian, seeing as how a real and future hell was part and parcel of our Lord's teaching.

Maybe I am being misleading about saying it is "a state of mind." It can more accurately be described as follows:
hell is what we make for each other. i make hell on a person when i make them suffer from my actions (intentionally). Vice versa.
