So, I just read my first Father Brown mystery (G.K. Chesterton).
Loved it- very Chersterton indeed. Reminds me a ton of "The Man Who Was Thursday".
I know that Robin and Aimee are familiar with Father Brown- anyone else?
I'm curious how they are going to match up to Sherlock Holmes.

Never heard of them. It sounds like Murder She Wrote....

I really enjoyed the 'meekness' of Father Brown, he wasn't ego-centric (mostly) It is fun having a guy who cares about the little things in life, and is inconsequential, being the main character. My favorite Chesterton 'mystery' book is 'Four Faultless Felons' It's about 4 people who do 'reverse' felony. It is a really neat and unique (as far as I know) idea

Somewhere I have a series of the Father Brow Mysteries on audio book. I will try and dig them out, and if I can find them I can make them available to anyone who would like to listen to them.

I've read quite a few of the stories by now and have loved most of them.
However, Chesterton's decidedly anti-Calvinistic nature comes out even more strongly than in his non-fiction*
*I'm a bit anti-Calvinist myself, but I wouldn't go as far as he.

I would get as far away from Calvinism as I possibly could. Calvinism makes God into a horrible, unjust monster. Open theists get a bad name, and are accused of committing some kind of heresy because they are perceived as not giving God his due respect in regards to future knowledge. Meanwhile Calvinism gets a pass from the Christian community while embracing a view of God that is sickening, to put it mildly.

I knew from his other books that Chesterton is pro-Catholic and anti-Calvinist, but in one of the Father Brown stories he goes so far as to insinuate that Calvinists aren't real Christians.

Well I would say that there are certainly misguided Calvinists that are still Christians, but I do think that Calvinist positions on election and predestination, of both the saved and damned, is certainly not in line with the Christian world view taught by Jesus and his Apostles. Calvinists are Christians despite their Calvinism not because of it.
As for John Calvin, I have my doubts. I have a very difficult time understanding how anyone with the love of Christ in them could have a man like Michael Servetus killed in such a cruel fashion over a theological dispute.
I've also read Jonathon Edward's Sermon entitled "Sinners in the hands of an Angry God" a few times. Very troubling. This is where Calvinism naturally leads. It's a theological view that should be taken seriously, and I cant really blame those who appose it outright and take a hard stance as Chesterton did.

I just finished the story "The Sign of the Broken Sword" in which the villian was turned to the dark side by nothing less than reading Scripture in isolation. Sounds like one Marcus could really get into

Robin- did you ever find these. I'm interested in them as well. I just finished reading volume 2 (so I've read them all now) but I'd love to listen to them sometime on my drive to work. But it sounds like Aimee and Chris are in line before me.

I think Alex and Aimee already returned them to me. Let me dig around and find them for you. Perhaps when I see you in a couple weeks I'll have them for you.
