Question:
From the Christian perspective, is Sin a cause of physical sickness?
In what ways? To what extent?

Does sin cause sickness? No. But without sin there is no sickness.
It's like asking if blinds cause darkness. No they don't make an inky substance that darkens a room, but they can block the light of day from coming in, just as sin can restrict the perfection of God from keeping us whole.

But there are times in Scripture when sickness appears to be the direct (supernatural?) consequence of particular sins. Are we to see this as exceptional or common? (I think it is exceptional)

Certainly sin brought sickness, and death to begin with.
Sinning can certainly bring about sickness to our physical being; our entire being, actually. Physical sickness, mental illness, all of what a human is can be made sick by sinning; by practicing, perpetuating sinful living.
Cell corruption, DNA copy mistakes, is what ages and eventually kills us. Anything done to place that process in danger of replication errors can cause sickness, does cause sickness.
