Have you read his "Will the Real Heretics Please Stand Up?"
I have mixed feelings about it.
But I also immensely appreciate his compendium/ dictionary of early Christian Beliefs.
On another note, are you familiar with Thomas Oden, and if so, what do you think of him?

On another note, are you familiar with Thomas Oden, and if so, what do you think of him? It's been a few years since I read and listened to a lot of Bercot's materials, but from what I remember, I thought the Heretics book was very good. I don't remember feeling uncomfortable with anything in there. I haven't heard of Oden - I've heard the term paleo orthodoxy, but I don't really know much about it, though I wonder if it's a bridge to Roman Catholicism. It speaks the language of the faith once delivered, but then seems to have a view akin to the development teaching of the RCs - but that is just the impression I have.

So, Thomas Oden is probably known best for his book Rebirth of Orthodoxy. but he's also the editor of the Ancient Christian Commentary on Scripturewhich are way cool. On another note: Even though I don't necessarily see paleo-orthodoxy as a "bridge to the RCC", would such a bridge be a bad thing?

This is great! Though I am left with so many questions.I need more info.... I have only read very little about the early church. I need some good books that "not so bright" people like me would understand. I have a RC friend. She is convinced I need to "Get saved" and become Catholic to be fully fulfilled. She says that Catholocism has the "true understanding" of scripture, and once I am a Catholic my soul will be saved from purgatory. I personally believe there are Catholics who are full on Spirit filled Christians and people who really love the Lord. So I am not of any "Holier than thou" mindset on my end. I just wonder why I am suddenly needing conversion? Why is this the ONLY way? I sum this up to say that.......I need some books, and a good unbiased church history lesson. Does anyone know???

Lemme think about some good books to recommend. And feel free of course to ask any questions anywhere here. History is my cup o' tea! (I'm a high school social studies teacher for my day job)

I am not sure what forum I should be posting in, but my question was who excatly was responsible for our current bible. I am familiar with the fact that there were many early Catholics who gave us our current bible. But why are there what 4 or 5 more books that have been removed from the regular bible? Or should I say added to the Catholic bible?? Like why not the book of Macabees, or the book of Wisdom?
