Hagia Sophia was the seat of the Archbishop of Constantinople. When Constantinople fell to the Islamic hoards rather than desecrate it, they gently covered the iconography and build a mosque shell inside of it. Today it is an inter religious museum! I feel that it should be restored to the bosem of Christendom!!!!!! What say you?

Judging by your comments on the "Gothic Churches are Hot" thread, I would anticipate that you would advocate it be stripped of it's finery and auctioned off

I don't like Gothic churches this is true. However a man so well versed in Church history as you should know that Byzantine architecture is a far cry from Gothic, and I LOVE Byzantine arch.

They were nice enough to not destroy it... which is more than the Crusaders would have done in all likelihood.

Yes, and now we must take it back. I say we make it a non negotiable term in the EU negotiations. I.E. Turkey wants into the European Common Market (which has major implications with its trade with the USA and Canada as well) Turkey gives Hagia Sophia back to the Orthodox Archbishop of Constantinople who is pitificully hiding in Greece as we speak!

This is an amazing structure. I have often felt robbed somehow because it was taken over by the Muslims (even though I am not an Eastern Orthodox Christian).
