Hosea 3:1
The LORD said to me, "Go, show your love to your wife again, though she is loved by another and is an adulteress. Love her as the LORD loves the Israelites, though they turn to other gods and love the sacred raisin cakes."
This passage, and many others in Hosea alone got me thinking about how many people have a hard time reconciling the God of the Old Testament with the God of the New Testament, and how it really doesn't take to much digging in the OT to demonstrate that we are talking about the same God throughout. As we saw parallels in the last chapter between Gomer and the Prodigal Son, in the above passage I see a definite forerunner of a huge "New Testament" concept:
Romans 5:8
But God demonstrates his own love for us in this: While we were still sinners, Christ died for us.
It's really not a "New Testament" concept. It's a Bible concept.
Also, I found it insightful that even though Hosea has extended unmerited grace toward Gomer, that doesn't mean she doesn't need to experience a period of repentence and restoration ("many days"). I find a great balance or healthy tension between grace and forgiveness on the one hand and repentence and accountability on the other hand in this story of Gomer and Hosea.

There is something about the words in these verses that just makes me want to sigh.
Once again, the same old story--God loves us and we love raisin cakes.
I feel overwhelmed by God's patience and longsuffering even in the knowledge that eventually we will, once again, "come trembling to the Lord and to His goodness." God is able to maintain a steadfast love inspite of constant rejection by the Israelites--and us. It reminds me of how easily I lose patience with friends who insist on acting in their arrogance as they reject Him. My first instinct is to walk away from them. Apparently, God feels otherwise.
There is a lot of modelling about real love here for me to emulate.

Once again, the same old story--God loves us and we love raisin cakes. LOL! I had to chuckle at this. So plainly put, Margot!! Can you imagine what the world would be like if we could truly love others as God loves us?

That was a memorable line, Margot!
Anyone want to start a Hosea 4 thread? (first one to do it gets the Sept. Contest points for it! ;D)
