Here's a poem I wrote years ago about one of my favorite LOTR themes, Moria. For what it's worth...
Moria A tribute to JRR Tolkien
Moria, depths of terror Woeful disaster haunting
Ages of deep and powerful mystery Durin’s bane stalking
Comes a light from Hollin’s gate Gandalf the Grey is knocking
The dread tomb- sealed By the dark pool Watcher
Friends journey in the dark On fearful paths ever farther
A sleepless night by bottomless well Shakes everyone’s heart and stature
Shafts of light reveal recent grief Answers better left unknown
Still there is honor in the wretched depth At brave but foolish Balin’s tomb
And how suddenly the travelers, weary Are from their reverie flown!
Giant fists pound the ancient doors Wicked laughter of fell beasts
Elven arrows sing and swords shine bright Followed by a hastening retreat
The dark presence held by Gandalf alone As the Ring makes it safely East
The fateful bridge of Khazad-dum The Balrog’s fury engaged
Secret fire meets shadow’s power In a tumultuous fiery blaze
The beast is felled but with mournful price Gandalf falls- the end of his days
