11/8/06: Since it was my halloween creation, and few people likely including myself would recall the specifics from their high school literature, I thought I'd post the short story. It seems to fit in well with other aged explorations of man and his/her reaction to evil on this board. Fortunately it's a very short read. I've found opportunity from it to consider reactions and habits in regard to comfort, fear, the isolation of self and the costs borne by others. A bit of a morality play steeped into engaging, perhaps haunting visuals. My $0.02. www.poemuseum.org/selected_works/red_death.html

11/8/06: It's been a long while. I'll have to give it a read... and maybe read it with my students this year. I think you might need to post us a little pic of your "Masque"

Just read it with the students today. They loved it... had a great discussion about morality and the futility of insulating yourself from suffering... and also about the number 7.

Very poetic language, very timeless story. I had forgotten the visceral punch of the ending.
And it does make you consider our response to mortality, community, and fear.
Thanks for the refresher
