Chris,
Having watched the movie again twice in the last week, if your plan was akin to the one in Amazing Grace, go for it! There really wasn't anything at all morally questionable about the move, it was just sneaky because it flew under the radar.
Makes me think of that line from Tolkien: "The weakest way the surest to catch the enemy unaware"

We watched "Atonement" the other week. MILD SPOILER AHEAD
I give it high marks on cinematography, and I thought the beginning of the film hung together well. Acting was mostly good, but I have to say I was rather disappointed with the whole philosophical point the storyline was working towards, which seemed shallow and left me rather empty. I'm all for the "power of story" etc..., even the power of myth, but if atonement isn't more than just that, well...
Anyone else see it?
BTW, there's an interesting connection between Amazing Grace and Atonement, as the actress who plays Wilberforce's wife is one of the main characters in Atonement.
Additionally (since I'm doing the whole 6 degrees of Kevin Bacon thing), I am told that the director of Amazing Grace will be directing The Voyage of the Dawn Treader (way cool), and the actor who played Mr. Tumnus in The Lion, the Witch.... is the main character in Atonement.
Heh heh.

I just noticed that Brian and Sarah mentioned Atonement earlier on the thread. Seems like they liked it.

Hola from Costa Rica!!
I can't wait to see the Namesake. I read the book a couple of years ago and it was sooo good. I hope the movie compares.

Well, I haven't read the book, but the movie was great. You can borrow it from us (I bought it used).
Hope things are going well in Costa Rica! Give K and D hugs.

I plan to read the book "The Namesake". The movie just reached out and grabbed me emotionaly, I had not expected that.
For me it was an example of art transcending culture, language, etc. to depict a truth about our human experience in a simple way. I think that there were several powerful concepts addressed in the film, and depending on the person watching it and their mood at the time, one, several, or none of them might resonate with them

Did anyone hear see "No Country for Old Men"? Rose and I watched it last night. Having read virtually nothing about the movie before hand, the end was a bit surprising. Rose didn't seem to thrilled that it ended like that, but I've been mulling over the themes all day. For now, one thing I liked about it was that it dealt with the tension between "the world is going to hell in a handbasket" mentality and the idea that "there is nothing new under the sun" when it comes to human depravity. Anyone else see it? Thoughts? PS: I'm not necessarily recommending the movie. I certainly wouldn't recommend it to anyone. It's very dark and be prepared to witness an incredible amount of murder.

Rose and I just watched Michael Clayton (George Clooney/ Tilda Swinton). Has anyone else seen it? Again, I'm not recommending it officially because some might be too put off by the language/ violence (view wisely). The thing about this movie is that the viewer is offended for a purpose. To me, the violence and offensive language weren't gratutious but only served to underscore the central, redemptive point of the film. Some of the themes explored here are highly significant from a Christian point of view: a) depravity and redemption, b)the "foolish" things of the world shaming the "wise" (there's a wonderful picture of the foolishness or "insanity" of the gospel for those who have eyes to see it), c) the power of epic story/ mythology to help us see what is real, d) the emptiness of nihilism I don't want to spoil it for anyone but I am curious if anyone else saw it? We expected a suspense/action movie and I came away moved by the Holy Spirit. Clooney was awesome in it (a unique role for him) plus there were just some marvelously artistic scenes which I didn't think we're "stuck on" but fit really seamlessly throughout. I've just seen it once, but man it's a goldmine for metaphor.

saw it! Loved it! I don't remember breaking it down so in depth, but I love the analysis. It makes me want to watch it again.
Has anyone seen "There Will Be Blood"? Daniel Day lewis is ridiculous (in a good way). It's really good, pretty dark, and really intense.

I've avoided it because I heard it wasn't very redemptive and I need as much of that as I can get these days. Is that an accurate assessment of the movie?

You heard right. Although, it does show the progressive nature of evil, as well as the destructive-seductive-empty-ness of greed, lust of power and money, deceit, etc. But you certainly won't leave the movie w/ warm and fuzzies.

I just saw Michael Clayton and enjoyed it. And I saw No Country for Old Men and enjoyed that, too.
I really want to see There Will Be Blood, but I thought i'd read the book first because I enjoyed Sinclair's "The Jungle". Unfortunately I wasn't feeling it, so I may have to see the movie first.

I've only seen 3 of those movies, so I voted for them. I do want to see like 6 more on that list.
