Ok, as promised, and picking up the discussion Josh and I had this weekend regarding this question and others related to the RCC, here are the quotes I’ve seen from Popes claiming to be God on earth. (Note all quotes come from Revelation: Four views by Steve Gregg who gave various historicist authors as his sources):
Now, almost all of the reformers identified the Pope as the 2Thes2 man of sin, and likewise many of the Anti-Nicene fathers saw these as coming up out of the then present Roman empire, as do I.
And the “little horn” in Daniel.
Now, an interesting comparison here (in case you didn’t notice) was the highlighted part above and this phrase from Nicholas:
Also noteworthy IMO, is that this kingdom is said to be "different from the first ones". It can be argued that the RCC, though not a formal "kingdom" per se, how greater power than all the kingdoms in Europe during the middle ages because of the threat of interdict (witholding the Eucharist and thus salvation itself according to RCC doctrine).
Thoughts?
Pope Nicholas:.[/i]
"The Roman Pontiff judges all men, but is judged by no one….I have the authority of the King of Kings, I am all in all and above all… Wherefore, if those things that I do be said not to be done of man but God, what can you make me but God?…Wherefore no marvel if it be in my power to change time and times, to alter and abrogate laws, to dispense with all things, yea, with the precepts of Christ; for where Christ biddeth Peter to put up his sword and admonishes his disciples not to use any outward force in revenging themselves, so do not I, Pope Nicolaus, writing to the bishops of France, exhort them to draw out their material swords?…I conclude, commanding, declaring, and pronouncing, to stand upon necessity of salvation, for every creature to be subject to me.”
Pope Leo XIII (Apostolic letter of June 20, 1894):
“We hold the place of Almighty God on earth”
Pius X:
“The Pope…is Jesus Christ himself, hidden under the veil of flesh.”
Pius XI (April 30, 1922):
“You know that I am the Holy Father, the representative of God on earth, the Vicar of Christ, which means that I am God on the earth.”
Now, almost all of the reformers identified the Pope as the 2Thes2 man of sin, and likewise many of the Anti-Nicene fathers saw these as coming up out of the then present Roman empire, as do I.
2 Thess 2:3-5
3 Let no one deceive you by any means; for that Day will not come unless the falling away comes first, and the man of sin is revealed, the son of perdition, 4 who opposes and exalts himself above all that is called God or that is worshiped, so that he sits as God in the temple of God, showing himself that he is God.
NKJV
And the “little horn” in Daniel.
Dan 7:7-8
7 After this I saw in the night visions, and behold, a fourth beast, dreadful and terrible, exceedingly strong. It had huge iron teeth; it was devouring, breaking in pieces, and trampling the residue with its feet. It was different from all the beasts that were before it, and it had ten horns. 8 I was considering the horns, and there was another horn, a little one, coming up among them, before whom three of the first horns were plucked out by the roots. And there, in this horn, were eyes like the eyes of a man, and a mouth speaking pompous words.
NKJV
Dan 7:19-25
19 "Then I wished to know the truth about the fourth beast, which was different from all the others, exceedingly dreadful, with its teeth of iron and its nails of bronze, which devoured, broke in pieces, and trampled the residue with its feet; 20 and the ten horns that were on its head, and the other horn which came up, before which three fell, namely, that horn which had eyes and a mouth which spoke pompous words, whose appearance was greater than his fellows. 21 I was watching; and the same horn was making war against the saints, and prevailing against them, 22 until the Ancient of Days came, and a judgment was made in favor of the saints of the Most High, and the time came for the saints to possess the kingdom.
23 "Thus he said:
'The fourth beast shall be
A fourth kingdom on earth,
Which shall be different from all other kingdoms,
And shall devour the whole earth,
Trample it and break it in pieces.
24 The ten horns are ten kings
Who shall arise from this kingdom.
And another shall rise after them;
He shall be different from the first ones,
And shall subdue three kings.
25 He shall speak pompous words against the Most High,
Shall persecute the saints of the Most High,
And shall intend to change times and law.
Then the saints shall be given into his hand
For a time and times and half a time.
NKJV
