9 Rejoice greatly, O Daughter of Zion! Shout, Daughter of Jerusalem! See, your king comes to you, righteous and having salvation, gentle and riding on a donkey, on a colt, the foal of a donkey. 10 I will take away the chariots from Ephraim and the war-horses from Jerusalem, and the battle bow will be broken. He will proclaim peace to the nations. His rule will extend from sea to sea and from the River to the ends of the earth.
Though vague, we have here the hope of the Messiah equated (again, as in Gen. 49:11) with donkey imagery. In Gen. 49 it is unclear exactly whether David or the Messiah was in view, but here in Zechariah, written more than 500 years after David) it is clearly referring to the Messiah.
"Having salvation" definitely fed the Christian understanding of the Messiah's role. That the Messiah would bring a message of peace is also seen here, as well as the belief that in some way he would reign over the entire world. This was the great hope of the Jews, that God would someday bless all nations through them, as God promised to Abraham in Genesis 12:2-3.
