17The reason my Father loves me is that I lay down my life—only to take it up again. 18No one takes it from me, but I lay it down of my own accord.
Justus was telling me the other day that he was confused about whether Jesus died because bad men killed him or if he died to save us from our sins. Was it something that others did to Him or something He volunteered for, basically. He didn't understand how both could be true. I was a little blown away by this, of course. I didn't expect to be trying to explain this kind of thing at age 4. But it is an interesting paradox- one that has produced a lot of pretty lame comments on history channel type documentaries, in my opinion. I think it's important to recognize that it's a paradox-- yes, the Romans and Jewish authorities were responsible for Jesus' death. Yes, we all were responsible. And, yes, He chose it willingly.
16I have other sheep that are not of this sheep pen. I must bring them also. They too will listen to my voice, and there shall be one flock and one shepherd.
I understand that Mormons and Muslims view this verse as referring to them. This is just a lesson in the practical importance of reading the Bible in it's obvious context: the 'other sheep' are obviously the Gentiles, no doubt.
4...and his sheep follow him because they know his voice.
It takes time to get to know his voice well, doesn't it? Don't be discouraged if you feel like that.
