A quick point:
Not all occupations serve God the same. The tinker, tailor, soldier and spy have different purposes to different masters. What is continuous to God is how we fulfil them. God rejoices in the repairman who devotes his free time to missions. He despises the priest who abuses children. He rejects the policeman who takes bribes and embraces the one that disrupts a lynch mob.
There's room in grace for life pursuits, provided they don't conflict with faith. Just like there's room for watching sports or going fishing, provided we get out of the boat when he calls.
Specifically towards art, to suppress Christians from art is to deny expression of the heartsong; and expression for Him is not to be rejected but celebrated. To reject good for fear of evil is a lie of legalism, and denies the whispered guidance of the Holy Spirit to where each person fits.
What would be left of culture if it we didn't capture truth? It can't be the better part.

Came across this in my reading today:
Luke 3:10-14 “What should we do then?” the crowd asked. John answered, “Anyone who has two shirts should share with the one who has none, and anyone who has food should do the same.” Even tax collectors came to be baptized. “Teacher,” they asked, “what should we do?” “Don’t collect any more than you are required to,” he told them. Then some soldiers asked him, “And what should we do?” He replied, “Don’t extort money and don’t accuse people falsely—be content with your pay.”

This is something that has troubled me as I have read some of the forum postings. In several forums people have suggested that certain occupations are acceptable to non-Christians, but not for Christians. For example, soldier, policeman, politician, and executioner. I have a problem with this. If a job is honorable or at least necessary, why should it be unacceptable to anybody? Or if a job is not honorable or necessary, why should it be acceptable to anybody? I don't think this standard is a paradox, I think it is hypocrisy. Anybody want to share their opinion, please? I retired from police work after 25 years. Although I value my pension, I would find it difficult to do it again. My view is that the anabaptists are pretty close to what Jesus taught.
