So, I was listening to Jennifer Knapp this morning on the way to work. She is absolutely my favorite female musician. And I found myself bemoaning once again that she has been on a mysterious musical hiatus for the last 8 years. Today I did a quick search online to find out that she has RETURNED and a new album is coming out soon. I am incredibly stoked. Do people still say stoked?

The new album isn't LIVE, btw. That's an older one.

Kansas is great. I actually think her second album Lay It Down, is also just as good, if not even better. Do you know that one?
I'm thinking of making a "best of" selection of my favorites from all 4 of her albums.
What I really like about her is the combo of strong, amazing vocals, stylistic variety, and amazing lyricism. In other words, she's strong on all fronts.
Many of her songs read like a prayer and are so laced with Scriptural references. Her songs challenge as much as they encourage.

I have been listening to Jennifer Knapp a lot lately. I just can't get enough of her. Maybe she'll travel to P-town soon.

Wow. Pretty devastating to me I found her remark about her old music (that "It's like somebody else wrote it") very chilling.

Pray for her in love. Sad indeed.

Josh and Carrie,
Two questions:
1. I'd like to hear from both of you what specifically you find "sad indeed" and "devastating" about this news.
2. Do you see anything positive about this news?
P.S. Try not to read any inferences into my questions.

You mean like you're using us as guinea-pigs for an upcoming lesson? Okay, I'll take the bait: 1) It's sad and devastating not because she admits to homosexual desires, tendencies, or even behavior. It's sad and devastating because she has concluded that she now sees an active, homosexual lifesyle as compatible with her faith. She doesn't see homosexual acts as sinful. She is deliberately sinning and claiming it's not sin. And it's extra sad because she always seemed more insightful and tenaciously willing to surrender her life in obedience to the gospel than many of her peers in the Christian music industry. You could tell in her earlier albums that she wrestled with sin; now it seems like a giving in. That's sad to watch in anyone. 2) Well, the honesty is good. I would say that this is also an opportunity for Christians to step up to the plate and demonstrate both God's love and his truth, "speaking the truth in love", etc.. Sometimes a "coming out" like this causes the church to realize how it has contributed to something being "bottled up"- by stigmatizing certain sins over others, etc.. However, I'm not sure that is the case in this situation. I don't get the impression, even according to her, that the "church" treated her bad, etc.. It's also probably a warning about celebrity status and putting fallible people (read: all of us) on pedestals.

I see no intellectual reason not to. Her stuff was spot on.
But I think it's going to be a while until I sort through my emotions enough.
It's kinda how I feel about Larry Norman's music. It's just kinda hard to go there knowing what I know now.

Interstingly, I think "Trinity" would be one of the most awesome prayers I could think of to offer for her right now I suppose.
Trinity- by Jennifer Knapp
You in the mirror starin' back at me Oh, conscience let me be To the pure, all things are pure To those who're defiled, unbelieving, nothing is pure Their minds, their conscience defiled They profess to know God But deceive Him by deeds all the while
Where do I stand? On the rock or in the sand? Oh, Holy Spirit won't You help me understand?
Holy Spirit, won't You say a prayer for me? With your groanings My mind, my conscience defiled Send the blood of the lamb don't leave me in exile
What was that promise on the cross at Calvary? Confess the Lord and the truth shall set you free (yeah) Create in me a clean heart, O God Renew a steadfast spirit whithin me To my prayers you've always given heed
Blessed be thy God Who never turned away from me Hid his face from all my sin, forgot Forgot my iniquity
(Go on and) Raise your hands sing praises to the Lord He is the King and He'll reign forevermore He died on the cross at Calvary He died to save a wretch like me
