Car woes today + facebook have got me thinking about old cars of mine today and an idea for a thread came to me. What was your favorite car you ever owned? Mine was my first. A blue 1976 Volvo 244 DL. It was my grandpa Charlies. I mowed lawns to earn it from him. He taught me to drive stick in it. It was a tank. Sucked tons of money out of my empty wallet but I loved that thing. Took it on my first backpacking trips, proposed to my wife in it. Ah... It was rear-ended by a drunk driver while parked by our first apartment. I was sad to see it go. So many memories. I wonder if I have pictures of it. I'll have to look, but here's a picture of the same make and model from the web so you can see it in all it's grandeur: Probably my funniest memory of it was driving the insanely steep and rocky road up to Badger Lake on the east side of Mt. Hood with Steve "surfing" on the back trunk, literally on the edge of the cliff, and calling out for rocks ahead. Nice.

Did I mention I got more for it than it was worth when it was totalled. She was just so good to me... even to the very end

I loved all of my Volvos. Mostly. First: '79 242 DL. "Augustine". My parents told me they could loan me 1000 dollars max for a car. Out of all of my options, this was the winner. Loved him. Second: '84 Diesel Wagon. "Ben Hur". Gave me lots of problems and it finally died on me. Third: '80 Wagon. "Willis". Had him for four and a half years. I bought him in 2002 with 100k on him (one previous owner, pristine exterior and interior) and sold him in 2006 with 130k on him. And I sold him for the same price I bought him for I still regret selling him. I have a Honda Civic now. It's reliable, and gets great gas mileage. It has air conditioning and cupholders. I'm not attached at all. Pictures to come.

Funny.... I drive an Accord now. Probably my best car all and all (though it's getting old now) Still, no real connection either.
Cars just don't have the same character these days....
In between I drove Rose's CRX for a short while (definitely not my style)
And then there was what we called the Grandpamobile... the low point in my car career, the Acclaim.

I had a 1996 black Eclipse Spyder Convertible with a turbo (first year limited edition). This car was fast, and beautiful. When I went to work for my father in 01' I bought it from my mom because it was more professional, and economic that the 1/2 Chevy pick-up I was driving. Unfortunately one night my sister called me at 3 AM claiming that she was trapper in her apartment and there were guy outside with baseball bats, and she needed help. So in my attempt to be the hero I jumped in my car and raced over to her house. In the process, I lost control and hit a light pole going about 50 MPH. It was scary. Air bags deployed and burnt my arms, and I wasn't wearing my seat belt. I was fortunate enough to glance off the light pull. If I had bee another foot to the right I would have taco-ed the front end of the car and likely killed myself, or been seriously hurt. Needles to say the car was totaled. Oh by the way, my sister was not in danger. the police had already been there and left after arresting my brother in law for fighting with these guys one of whom had a bat. My mother was very upset because I could have been killed, and she always planned on buying the car back when I was ready to sell it. It was a real beauty. Cameron who was only 3 at the time still remembers it.

My first car was my favorite: 1962 Chevy II Nova. It had a Straight 6, and this model had the Canadian Grill. She was "The Beast". I drove the heck out of it. It had alignment problems, so I had to get new tires for it every other month or so. When I bought it, it had no seat belts, so I had to self-install. It also had no radio, so I had a Boom-Box in the back seat one which I played Whiteheart's Freedom and Petra's Beyond Belief endlessly on.
You people from the Clackamas area might know Lawnfield Road. It was a "short cut" to get to Clackamas proper without taking the freeway. At the time, there was a stretch that was not populated, so I used to punch it around the curves. I got up to 110 mph one time on that stretch, but then hit a patch of gravel and did two full 360s. It was the biggest rush of my life.
The maintenance got to be too much for my (and my dad's) wallet, so I sold it to a kid a few years younger than me, who was going to restore it with his grandpa. He got in a head on collision shortly after that, and it was totaled.
It was a great car, and I doubt I will ever have another I like more.

My favourite car has to be Jasper the caravan, he got burnt down but he left so many happy memories he did. He may have been unnecessarily cremated but hey his life was a goody. Trips to the lakes were most memorable when we used to go down. But the next time we went in a tent in February i realised just how lucky we were to have the camper. Never before had i had to ask someone else to heat a gas cannister up so it would work. My dad gave me the pleasure of asking.

My favorite was a 69 Mustang Mach 1 I had in San Diego. Unfortunately I don't have any pictures of it, but here's a photo of that vintage. The bad part about this car was that every Camaro you pulled up to at the light wanted race you (and at age 22, it's hard not to oblige ;D).

By the way, I just bought a Jeep Liberty. Time will tell if I like it or not. My fear is that it's nothing more than a Chrysler in Jeep's clothing, but so far the feedback I get is pretty positive.

My first car which belonged solely to me was a 76 Dodge Aspen. Dan Sauder dubbed it affectionately "The Coffin". The reason for this, is that one could not get out of the back seats unless somebody from outside opened the door. The car was in retrospect a disaster, but back then I thought it was the coolest thing. My favorite memory of it was in the parking lot of Fred Meyers in Milwaukie with Rosemary sitting in the passengers seat. I started to accellerate forward and her seat flew backwards into the reclining position. She started laughing hysterically, as did I. I think we must have laughed for 15 minutes without a break.

My favorite car (besides the one I drive now - because I totally LOVE it!) has to be the cherry red Honday CR-X that I got when I was in 11th grade. I had been driving a Mazda TLC (lame) but was rear-ended while coming off the freeway one day and it was totalled. The CR-X was used but completely awesome for a San Diegan in high school! I loved that car and then when I installed a new CD player you just couldn't beat it. I ended up driving it up to Oregon when I moved here and Josh and I had it even after we were married. But I'll never forget those cool high school days driving around in my hot car!
