Just wanted to get an idea of how many of you might be interested in organizing a "men and boys" backpacking trip this summer?
Chris and I talked about it a bit.
The idea would be a short hike-in trip (about 2 miles or so?) at a location that would be good for kids.
Post here if you're interested and also let me know what times during the late spring/ summer/ early fall works best for you.

So, I'm thinking early August. How does that sound?

I'll give a penciled nod to that, pending the approval of my activity coordinator

That sounds good to me. But I'm a little concerned about hiking to a lake on Santiam pass in August. Sounds like a nice breakfast for the mosquitos to me. Is there any kid sized hikes you can think of where the water is moving? I'll do some checking around too.

Yeah, I've been thinking about that too. It's really hard to tell- some years mosquitoes there have been just fine, others not so much.
Yeah, let's look around.

We're in, although first week of August might be more difficult. Is middle of August an option? Say Aug 14 - 16?

I think that could work (Aug. 14-16)
Does that work for Robin and Chris?
Also, I think I might have located a decent location for the trip.
It's the Mill Creek wilderness northeast of Prineville.

let me check my calendar at home. I sure that the first weekend in August is no good. We have a family reunion that weekend. I will get back to you and the other date.

Just picked up a book with some great ideas for a kids backpacking trip in Oregon.
Two short, easy hikes with high solitude ratings!
One is in the coast range and the other is near Mt. Jefferson.
Both are lakes with forest hikes.
What do you think?

So, I got a book with tips on backpacking for kids. I'll post some gleanings: 1. I think it would be cool for us to bequeath "emergency whistles" to each of the kids- with a solemn oath* that they not use them unless they are lost or in danger. You know, we can play up the Susan's/ Boromir's Horn angle. * Chris, your kids can just let their yes be a yes
