Seems to be a hot topic in the group right now.
For me, generally no (besides an occasional california roll)
However, squid, yes...

Sushi isn't my favorite either...yes, I've had it occasionally, but it really isn't the greatest. My big beef (ha-ha) with sushi is that you dip everything in the same three sauces (flavors) - soy sauce, wasabi, and ginger. There isn't a great variety of dipping sauces. If they offered a wider variety of sauces to dip into, I'd definitely be more on board. Everything tastes the same!

1/3/07: So, yes I deffinately love Sushi, of course on the cold days like these accompanied by the Miso soup. It took me a bit of tasting before I could get on board with the raw fish. My 'gateway' dish was 'seared salmon' (half raw half cooked) and after a few times of that I could try the raw and now I enjoy it, especially salmon and tuna (I also love the cooked mussles they often have). I don't have sushi just anywhere though, I only enjoy eating it at well-known restaurants that I trust. Oh, and I don't think I will ever be brave enough to try some of the riskier sushi such as puffer fish.

i could eat sushi e'ryday. no lie. in my opinion the whole raw fish thing gets a little overplayed. i gotta say though rose, i do feel your pain. i'm a sauce man myself, and the soy sauce just doesn't cut it. whenever i go i always ask for an alternate sauce. yes, sometimes it's a little awkward when you ask, but you gotta do what you gotta do.
my favorite spot is mio sushi on about 42nd and hawthorne. the typical order consists of: gyoza for an appetizer. then you keep your gyoza sauce (which is the best alternate sauce i've had) for your sushi. the sushi order consists of a double crunch roll (spicy tuna, add cream cheese, fried in tempura) and a tempura shrimp roll. yum yum.

It's pretty embarrassing asking for the ranch, huh?

It's ok once in a while and as an appetizer, but I have a hard time making it an entire meal.

No, no and... no. I've tried Sushi a number of times (because everyone keeps convincing me to try it again). I just flat out don't like it... not even the California Rolls. Of course, it could be that I have a fish tank, and I can't help but think, this stuff I'm eating smells a lot like my dirty, bacteria infested fish tank. Maybe I'll go over and dip my cup in for a nice drink of water. I'm sure the ingredients in Sushi are (generally) washed, but still... the smell alone kills me. And I hate seafood (except fish and chips, and that's probably only because it's breaded and deep fried!).
Sorry to all of you Sushi lovers.

I like sushi. A lot. I can't say I like the exotic stuff made in remote sectors of Japan that require fermentation, but I've yet to have something I couldn't eat again. It's rare, mind you, for me to seek out Sea Urchin but sometimes the mood strikes.
I do recall a time when an intensive sushi diet carried me through a very difficult trip last year. I had made the mistake of drinking some very dubious water at a questionable Indian restaurant in Hong Kong (nothing against the restaurants there mind you, this one was a bit sub-par). For the next ten days the diarrhea and the dehydration battled each other for supremacy within my digestive system.
The only thing that kept me and my equally embattled coworker functional was our daily regimen of sushi accompanied by steeply medicinal amounts of sake. This combination effectively suppressed the little gastrointestinal blighters, sort of a personal "Battle of Britain" which gave our bodies time to mount an effective counteroffensive. At the end of the week we had the gerries on the run (literally), and I'm convinced the sushi/sashimi/sake/wasabi 'four corners' strikes carried us through.

Okay, So I am new to the forum, and at Marcus' pushing I finally made my way over here from the Winding Road.
I thought I would jump in on something a little light hearted so...To sushi or not to sushi? That is the question. Whether 'tis nobler in the mind to suffer the slings and arrows of cooked meat or to take arms against a sea of raw fish!
So, I love it. About a year and a half ago I went out with my bro-in-law. He promised me I'd like it. Side note: I will eat just about anything. Anywho...I had no idea how to read the menu, no idea what I was about to eat, but I was feeling "it" and just went for it.
Since that day I have slowly been tasting new things in the sushi world. My favorites remain just a simple slice of raw salmon (sake) over sticky rice called Nigiri which is served in pairs. I like many different rolls (Maki) as well.
I have run into a few things I don't like...Urchin is right up there on the list.
Okay, I have officially dipped my proverbial sushi in the proverbial soy sauce and I look forward to interacting with you!

Well, I have to say that I'm not too excited about sushi. I tried a variety while I was visiting my friend in Japan, but I guess the California-esque roll (I suppose that's what it was) was decent. Just like a roll of Korean kimbop.
I just couldn't deal with the raw fish sitting on top of a pile of rice. Especially when I couldn't bite through the rubbery stuff. Uagaihgwheg agh.

Meghan, have you ever tried rolls with fish that was cooked, like a tempura shrimp roll? It's a deep fried piece of shrimp wrapped with cucumbers, avocado (different innards at different places). I'm not a big fan of the slab of fish on a pile of rice...known to some as sushimi... but I love, love, love rolls. So much easier to chew and much more flavor! I can't wait until I get to have it again on Thursday!!
